Halloween Tutorial- Bat Chandelier

When I was flipping through my Pottery Barn Kids catalog, I saw this great bat chandelier but there was no way I was paying that much for a seasonal decoration.....I am just funny like that.

It looked easy enough to reconstruct so that is what I did.

Supplies needed:

3 embroidery hoops, various sizes
black acrylic paint
tacky glue
black embroidery thread
large hand sewing needle
black pom-poms
black cardstock or felt (stiff felt preferred)

Instructions:

First Step was taking the inside hoops and painting them black
Next I cut out about 31 bats. I used black cardstock because I can cut 4 at a time versus one at a time with felt. Since this was an experiment, I didn't want to invest too much extra time. I just created my own bat stencil/template but if you'd like to use it, just email me at debye@cberryfamily.com and I'll send it to you.

Then I tied strips of the black embroidery thread approx 9" long around the hoop eyeballing them about 2 and 1/2 to 3" apart like this: After all the strings were attached, I took tacky glue and applied a little to the ends to make it stiff and much easier to thread. Then I put a small amount on each knot (around the embroidery hoop) to make it more secure.

To add the bats and pom poms, I threaded each strand (one at a time) on a needle and then I strung the bat and two pom poms. I tied a thick knot at the bottom so they wouldn't slide off over time and trimmed any excess. You can really play with the length of each strand to get the effect you want.

For the top and bottom tiers I used the pattern above, for the middle tier I did an alternating pattern of one bat and on pom pom with the other stand being two pom poms.

Once all the tiers were finished, I attached them with the embroidery thread and added glue to each knot again for extra security. Viola, your own bat chandelier for under $10!

My almost 6 year-old is a naturally cool kid. He can throw on some of the strangest clothing combos and totally pull it off! Yesterday he decided blue hair would be even cooler and he achieved this with his older brothers shower gel .....ugghhhh

Flower Frame Tutorial

This is one of my favorite quick & fun projects to make. I have had so many requests for the tutorial that I promised ages ago so I finally threw on together today! I love to give these as gifts with an inspirational quote in the center.

Supplies:

unfinished wood frame (I purchased mine for $1 at Michaels)

(1) 12" by 12" piece of patterned card stock (for frame)

(1) piece of card stock for the flowers (solid or print)

cutting mat and x-acto knife

ink pad (i used a copper/gold color)

circle punches, circle cutter or a plain old pair of scissors

sanding block

decoupage glue (i.e. Mod Podge)

3 bead or button (for flower centers)

hot glue gun

clear polyurethane top coat (spray can)

Instructions:

pick out your patterned paper. Please note the pattern shown. The opposite side is blue pods which you will see in the tutorial. *I prefer to use a thick card stock to help prevent bubbling.

Spread a thin layer of decoupage glue on the front side of the unfinished frame. Place the right side of the frame (with glue) onto the wrong side of the paper and press firmly. You can also turn over and rub lightly to be sure to remove any bubbles. Allow glue to set.

Place frame on cutting board and use an x-acto knife to cut around the frame. Don't worry about any small tears, you will be sanding the edges next and imperfections add character to the distressed edges!

Sand the outside and inside edges of the frame

it will look like this:

Now use an ink pad to go along the sanded edges. You are just going along the edge, not the entire depth of the frame. I use the fancy art technique of dipping a finger in ink and rubbing it on the frame to get the inside corners.

Now it should look kind of like this:

Now it is time for your flowers. You will want three "nesting" circles. My largest circle has a 3" diameter. I used a Marvy Uchida circle punches but you could use and circle cutter or even a compass or trace some household objects.

I normally use solid card stock for the flowers but I really like the print on the opposite side of the card stock so I decided to use the excess as my flowers. You will cut out three sets of circles. You need to use a thick card stock to really get a good shape to your flower when "squishing" it
Before squishing, I use a q-tip to color the center of the smallest circle to emulate "pollen"

Now for the fun part, squishing!I layer each flower then put my thumb in the center and "squish" the flower around my thumb. This is not a science and don't be too critical, it is adorable and does not need to be asymmetrical!

Now I ink the edges of each circle. I like to "squish" before I ink so the ink catches in some of the folds and wrinkles!Now you can assemble all three layers of each flower with a small dot of hot glue in the center of each layer.

Then in the center you can hot glue a bead or button. Once done, I like to figure out the placement of each flower. Sometimes I do a cluster, sometimes they all go on top and sometimes on one side. Be creative and see what fit with the design.

Once your flowers are affixed with hot glue you can seal and protect your beautiful frame with two coats of polyurathane. Put a picture or a quote in the center and it is ready to go!

Bridal Shower Gift......to go please

I received an invite to a bridal shower for a friends daughter and at the last minute my schedule cleared up so I am able to go! I refuse to use a registry for a bridal shower since this is a day for the bride and since I don't really know the bride, I was at a loss.

Then it came to me, a cute spunky apron for the soon to be newlywed. I have had this pattern for awhile but had not found the time to use it. This apron is simple yet has a beautiful drop waist and flutter to it. Add a few fabric flower pins and viola, it is ready to go! I hope she loves it and wears it during her first "domesticated" years so it can be a part of her fond memories.

I am doing this I'm Lovin' It Monday while laying in bed recovering from a sinus cold (pity me yet). While surfing the web from my sick bed, I came across this wonderful product that made me smile.......Happy Tape!

The ideas and uses for this product are endless, I must have them all......well, at least a lot!

Another thing I am lovin' is http://shopittome.com/. It is like your personal online shopping bargain hunter. You sign up, pick your favorite brands and sizes, how often you want your "salemail" and you get notified of what items are on sale. My favorite part is that you get a picture of each item so you can just browse through the email to see if there is anything that you must have! Since they only display what is available in your size, there is none of the disappointment of finding a great deal just to discover they only have it in the smallest or largest size available!

I just thought I'd share one of the fun projects I did yesterday as a birthday present for my mom. I had picked up this adorable turquoise embroidery hoop from JoAnn's ages ago with an idea in mind to use it with my kids hand prints.

So last night I traced my kids hands on to card stock for a template. Next, I used some fusible interfacing on the fabrics for stiffness and durability then I attached them to some white cotton that I put in the hoop with some embroidery floss. For fun, I added the button border this morning and voila, an adorable keepsake stitched with love.....no machine required! Oh, and I almost forgot...I did use a small amount of batting to add some dimension.

So I have been a bad cyber friend (we are friends, right?). Not only have I not been posting, I have become a lurker.....to lazy to post a comment after being amused by your posts, so rude of me....I know. I promise to do better.

Has it really been a month since I last blogged? I have had the summer lazies accompanied by multiple vacations, teaching three classes for a Super Saturday, and trying to squeeze in some great reads while working on my tan!

I even braved a 14 hour car ride to Idaho with just myself, a five-year old and two two-year-olds. It was worth it to see my good friend Kelli and her family. I love them so much I even tried to tell my husband we might need to move there...... It takes a dear friend to make you want to leave sunny San Diego, even for a moment!

p.s. am I the only one that dreads school starting again?

It is so hard to find fun fabrics for little boys so I am lovin' the new line "Oh, Boy!" by David Walker for Free Spirit. I love the colors and fun designs and I really love the great stripe!

I also had the very RARE opportunity to have a girls night out at the movies and we saw "The Proposal" and it outdid my expectations. You can't go wrong, in my mind, with Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds but there were also some comedy gems from the supporting cast...especially Betty White and Oscar Nunez (from The Office). I thought this movie was hilarious and well done. It was more of a comedy then a romantic comedy and it felt very fresh and new. I am not going to pretend it doesn't follow the predictable plot line of any romantic comedy but they are able to do it in a way that doesn't seemed forced.... I highly recommend it!

We celebrated Fathers Day with our annual tradition of going here after church for my husband's favorite apple pie! I'm Lovin' it Monday

So if you ask me what I am really lovin' right now, I'd have to say summer! No school to rush the kids to, no homework, and no real schedule...heaven. And with vacation #2 coming up this week, I thought I'd make it summer/travel related.

I am lovin' Gamewright games. They are fun, educational, unique and broken into age categories. We have become huge fans of card games like Cuckoo Zoo, Play Ball and Slamwich and dice games like Space Race. They are all travel sized an easy to store. Lighthearted family fun, what more can you ask for? If you live in the area, you can pick these up at the Totally Thomas Toy Depot in Carmel Mountain Ranch but they are also easy to find online.

Now for just the grown-ups.......go out and rent Taken with Liam Neeson. It is a really well done action movie that is not over the top or full of special effect explosions and unbelievability. It has (on top of everything) a strong storyline that will grip you from the first moment and hold you all the way through.

Oh, okay one more just for us ladies since I will be out of town next Monday. I am lovin' the Layla Dress from Layers Clothing. It is cute comfortable and will get you a lot of compliments at a price that won't break your budget.

I don't know how the release slipped by me, but I am lovin' the new Heather Ross line, Far Far Away. I love her whimsical take on some of my favorite classic story tales like the Princess and the Pea and the Frog Prince.

What else am I lovin'? I am lovin' Que Sera Sera by K & Company, but good luck finding it anywhere but online (but if you do, pick up one for me too). It is so popular that it flew out of all of our local Michaels Stores but it is definitely worth the extra shipping!

The papers are just gorgeous and some of the jewel tones they use are just dazzling. Complete with some glitter and texture, you will need very little in the way of embellishments!

I just love apron swaps, as if you didn't notice. The Busy Bee Apron Swap is wrapping up and was hosted by the talented duo Shawnee and Lucy! The theme was gardening and you were able to pick whether you wanted a gathered apron, gardening apron or a garden party apron. This is what I received my partner, Cynthia along with some other great goodies. I just love the color scheme, it defintitely reminds me of a summer garden and this pattern is one of my favorites, although I've only ever made them as gifts! Thanks again Cynthia

Okay, so lately I have had an addiction to Starbucks Signature Hot Chocolate...yummy. At least one a day (sometimes two). My husband has been trying to wean me off for financial reasons but for the last 5 months they have been my treat to myself in a hectic world.

A New Look for me and Etsy

I have been taking some time off from the "retail business" and dabbling in new crafts and techniques. Today I revamped my Etsy store with my first "home made" banner which is actually a layout that I scanned and cropped.

Along with the new look I am adding new types of products...paper crafting. You see, paper crafting can move room to room with me when I can't be in the studio for long without the toddlers attempting to kill each other plus.....I just love it!

Okay, I am breaking from the norm here. I want to share something I am lovin' BEFORE the three day weekend since it is a movie rental.

Lately, I have found myself shying away from comedies since they all seem to be in a competition of who can cuss the most, gross you out more with "potty humor" (as we say it in our house), and lets not forget the fun new thing.......male nudity on men you would never want to see in that state. To me, it has just stopped being about being funny and has just become a shock value type of humor.

My hubby and I decided to rent Yes Man and I am telling you it was great! I giggled out loud a LOT, which isn't normal for me. And besides the elderly neighbor, the humor was classicly funny without having to be gross to get a laugh. I found this movie refreshing, light and sweet. So if you haven't seen it yet, consider checking it out! Rated PG-13

We survived another party and what fun we had! Follow the dino tracks for a quick wrap-up...
We had tables set up with dino balloons (upside down balloons with dino faces drawn on) and table settings weighed down with sidewalk chalk eggs. I had a hard time finding non-scary dinosaur supplies so we improvised!

I used a dinosaur border punch from EK Success (purchased at Michaels) and punches borders on carstock as a placemat.

The goodie bags were plastic pail and shovels filled with goodies and dinosaur color sheets I printed from online.

Each kiddo got a dinosaur hat. Quick tip: to avoid having to size 30 hats or deal with yarn, use pipecleaners. A two second twist and it is done....viola!

Cooper loved the bouncer (this was before the crowd) at one point we had thirty kids going crazy in our yard :o)

Had to sneak in a photo of the party skirt. No, I am NOT pregnant. Some people have beer guts, I seem to be devolping a hot cocoa gut.

And what party is complete without a two year old wielding a baseball bat?

If you read my blog, you already know that I am a HUGE fan of Donna Downey, to me she is a kindred spirit (although I highly, highly doubt she thinks of me that way). This is just my latest one of her projects. It is an art quilt and I can tell you now that these are fun and addicting!

I am already on my second one and dreaming of my third. If you look at each square as it's own mini canvas, it really enhances the creative process. And while this one can hang on my wall, I see the possibilites for scrapbooking layouts and even a fabric book!

Thursday Thought and the Festival of the Arts

Our Stake Relief Society is having a Festival of Arts Show featuring different artists interpretation of the theme, "The Lord Looketh Upon The Heart" based on 1 Samuel 16:7: "for the Lord seeth not as man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart."

I immediately knew I wanted to do a scrapbook style layout for this project but I had been seeking inspiration on how to pull that off. Afterall, it didn't seem to right to put a picture of how we see each other on the outside on a layout meant to express that we are truly judged and seen by what is inside. Then it came to me that it shouldn't be so much of a standard photograph but an expression, a reflection of the heart and I thought of my favorite photo of Jonas and started cropping and printing it different ways. I was relieved that it all came together like I pictured it in my head (which isn't always the case) and I can't wait to see all of the other entries!

A Little Bit of Whimsy in an Apron

Still inspired by the Festival of Arts theme (you'll learn more about this tomorrow), I whipped up this whimsical apron yesterday. I had loved making this apron pattern for my swap partner a while back but I still hadn't gotten around to making one for myself until now. I love how the pleating on this apron is similar to that of a dress and I am crazy over the bodice and halter.

Can't you just picture me picking apples from my orchard or vegetables from my garden (i have neither) and skipping into the house to bake a pie?

I added a special message in an embellishment as a special reminder of what is important, I wonder if I could get away wearing it around town today because I really don't want to take it off!

100 Inchies Project, #51-60 Summer Theme

While I struggled with the last theme (Under the Sea) and felt the inchies did not reflect my personal style, this theme (Summer) came easily to me and I feel is a true reflection of my artistic style, love it or not! I had wanted to mix my favorite mediums, fabric, paper, ribbon and buttons. Combining mediums on a one inch square can be challenging but I am happy with the way they came out, hopefully my partners will like them!

A Little Mother's Day Treat

I am lucky to say that I am friends with some pretty fabulous women that just also happen to be fabulous Moms. Better yet, they help me to be a better mom through their laughter, support and sometimes commiseration! I wanted to do a little special something for them for Mother's Day so I altered some mini composition books and made some coordinating clothespin magnets and bought some chocolate, of course, .....lots of it!

Then I decorated the front of a plain white paper gift bag and cut off the front handle so I could hang them on their front doors as a suprise on Sunday ! Hopefully this little gesture will go a long way in showing them how special they are!

It's no secret, I LOVE Shade Clothing. In fact, I am relaxing right now in the Striped Boyfriend Tee in gray and white, but there I go getting distracted!

Shade has partnered with United Way for this fabulous campaign and 50% of the proceeds are distributed to families in need throughout the nation. I have had a very creative last few days (posts to come) so I had to narrow it down for today's picks.

First, I am lovin' this great Jane Market Bag pattern from Alicia Paulson over at Posie Gets Cozy . I can't wait to use mine out shopping and what a great, easy gift to make. Added bonus, downloadable pattern....talk about instant gratification!

If I have mentioned this before let me tell you again how much I love Tattered Angels Glimmer Screens and Mists. The stencils are easy to wash, sturdy and reusable and are such an easy way to add an elegant and subtle detail to your paper craftin, layouts, etc. You don't even want me to get started on how great the mists are....we could be here all day!

So after dinner, we decided to get in the car and go for a drive. As part of this ritual, we stopped at the drive-thru Starbucks to pick up hot cocoas and chocolate milk. While in the line at the drive-thru, the famous "no nap Cooper" fell fast asleep. He woke up long enough to take about two sips and then he fell back asleep. Enter cell phone camera...click.... So as we are laughing in the front, we keep hearing empty straw slurping sounds so we turn around to this.....click.........

For the rest of the drive, he stayed like this and every once and awhile you could hear the empty straw slurping as he tried to drink in his sleep. How he slept through the laughter, tears, and snorts, I have NO idea

Mother's Day Gifts......check!

Now that the flu appears to be out of our house and life is coming back in to focus, a wave of panic has taken its place with all the upcoming projects and events that have snuck up on me while I was in a two week flu haze.

Cooper is turning two in just over two weeks...invites, theme, bouncer oh my! And then it hit me.....Mother's Day. I fretted all night over mini album ideas and then I realized I had actually planned out gifts months earlier and already had all my supplies. Glass pendants....check! Chain and findings......check! Bails and E600......check! Diamond Glaze.......check! Picture of the boys....check! Jewelry maker......jewelry maker........OOPS, she moved! My friend Kelli and I picked out and purchased chain and findings right before she moved but I forgot to make the pendants and mail them to her in time. I realized I was going to have to attempt a new craft and quick.

Luckily, I have several of her pieces to work from and I had studied her style enough to put these necklaces together for gifts and speaking of that.....Mom, stop trying to figure out which of these is yours because neither are, some things can stay a suprise!
I tried to get a close up of the pendant but it didn't focus quite right on the picture, it looks much better in person!

And they were all packaged and tied with ribbon and topped with a handmade paper posie and off in the mail they go!

My new issue of Ottobre Design arrived this weekend and I am Lovin' their new summer line! Ottobre Design is a magazine created in Finland that specializes in baby and children's clothing patterns. Each magazine contains over 40 patterns and you will love them all, don't believe me? See for yourself:

What attracted me to Ottobre last year was that they had boy clothing that you would want actually want to put your sons in which is very hard to find. Also, it covers such a great age range so they can grow with you and/or take care of most of your families needs! The magazine does ship from Finland but after receiving these for so long, I can tell you I haven't run into an issues or delays. You can even buy past issues and single issues from their site. The truth about a house FULL of boys

So, people are always shocked when they realize I have a house of all boys. I can't tell you how many times I hear, you are going to try for a girl, right? Now, I never had any siblings so boys were new to me but I have found it to be such a rewarding and awesome experience that I don't know if I would have the patience for a bunch of girls. So here are a few truths and words of wisdom about raising all boys:

you will be the only one who knows how to find things

expect to get tackled every time you lay on the floor

you can not keep the bathrooms clean. If you are having company over you have to wait until 15 minutes before they show up to clean your bathroom in order to have any chance of it still being presentable.

you can not do braids or pigtails in any one's hair without getting in BIG trouble with your husband

Expect a lot of laughter and noise to fill your house with joy

Getting them dressed in the morning is a quick experience, they just don't care what gets thrown on.

Expect dirtiness and learn to look at as a measuring instrument for how much fun they have had. The better the time, the dirtier they are!

There will be occasional "potty humor" at the table. You can try to avoid it all you can but they are boys and it will sneak its way in!

Boogers are a part of life, a snotty nose does not equal a bad mom. Same goes for things being shoved up their noses, you will learn to respect and appreciate the alligator tool at the doctors.

Some Fun in the Sun

Last Friday (before the infamous stomach flu attacked) the weather was so beautiful that an impromptu trip to the beach was mandatory! So Jen, Kelli and I loaded 2 vans with 8 little boys and headed out for some fun in the sun!

Of course there was some sand eating, toddler chasing, and body surfing wipe-outs but overall it was a wonderful (but sandy) day!

p.s. is there anyone else in the world besides me who can not hear the word "infamous" without thinking of "El Guapo" from the Three Amigo's? Just wondering.......

Between Spring Break, the Nana in town, one of my best friends moving to Idaho and this fun stomach bug circulating through the house- it has been a while since my last post. Is anything worse then then a toddler with the stomache flu? It just breaks my heart, they have no idea what is going on and their eyes just plead for help. Hopefully, the worst of it is over!

They are a little pricey but worth it for an extra special project! What else am I lovin'? I am lovin' my Meiko CD , she has such an amazing voice and you can't help but sing along!

My Online Pledge

I pledge today that I will do NO online shopping for one month! I realize this sounds strange for someone to pledge who makes their income from online shopping but I do 80% of my non-necessity shopping online. Why? Well, for one, with five boys in the house I just don't have enough hands to run to the store unless it is absolutely necessary. Secondly, I find it is cheaper. If I go to the store I am highly unlikely just to buy the one thing I went to get. A quick trip can turn into a big spending trip in a blink of an eye. If I go anywhere near Target, I have to at least glimpse at the clothes, which leads to looking, which leads to loving, which leads to a $200 trip for diapers. And don't get me started on what happens when I go near a craft store.......Third, I love some particular clothing stores that aren't available in California and they keep coming out with new lines.....

So, by taking this pledge I am really pledging not to do any unncecessary spending for 30 days which is a challenge for a shop-a-holic but I also love a challenge. So wish me luck, strength and anything else!

p.s. of course before typing my pledge I did make two quick online purchases but that is okay because it starts......now!

I love this quote by Marjorie Pay Hinckley, it really rings true to me. Lately, life has been such a whirlwind! With our three boys and two foster sons (both under 2) that were surprises, what was supposed to be a temporary situation has been over four months now and has changed our life dramatically. As we were finally adjusting to the situation, drama broke out in one case and then our poor Cooper has been so sick and not responding to any antibiotics. I have been to the doctor with him every day this week and finally the aggressive treatment is over (after $125 in co-pays). It has been heart wrenching taking a child who was already petrified of the doctor's office there every day to sit for an hour and have shots while he cries and begs to go home. After yesterday's round I was worn down and needed a little celebration with the family. So we all went out to a fun dinner at Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger.....no more sickness, no more being trapped in the house, free at last!

Fun right? Well, it was until little Christopher, who had refused to eat dinner (VERY unlike him), looks up and then proceeds to throw up all over the table in a crowded restaurant. As I ran over to cover up the mess from the other customers, he continues all over himself and me. So I scooped him up like a football and ran outside. Another sickling, public embarrassment, cry or laugh? I am choosing to laugh!

Word Themed Inchies

I completed these word themed inchies over the weekend as part of the 100 inchie project on Swap-Bot . I knew exactly what I wanted to do for this theme. I watercolored each of the inchies' backgrounds and then used the words as inspiration for the design.

There is nothing like an inchie for a quick burst of creative refueling! I keep a container full of them on my workspace to play with, doodle on or draw inspiration from.

Yes, I am still alive but with Cooper still fighting a bad infection and lots of movement on Christopher's case, I just haven't been able to blog. I am praying that round three of antibiotics for Cooper and today's hearing for Christopher will bring some much needed peace!

Now, to business......this Monday I am lovin' Sassafras Lass' Paper Whimsy Blossoms . The large ones already have inked edges, what a time saver. I ran out and bought every set and I am saving them for something special!

My Poor Beautiful Eyes

It pains me just to look at my poor, sweet baby boy's beautiful big blue eyes all red and swollen and this is after cleaning out the gunk (that coordinated with the snot in his nose) that sealed them shut while he slept on my chest like he did when he was a itty bitty baby. The doctor thinks it is a bad infection from his cold that has spread to his eyes and ears but since the other two babies are getting yucky eyes, I am fearing conjunctivitis. I don't know how to survive a house with three babies with pink eye.....

so far the older boys are doing okay. I, on the other hand, am hanging on to my sanity by a thread. I wish I had more arms to comfort and cuddle............

Needless to say, no art projects or tutorials to share this week.

The past few months I have tried to refocus my life (and my business) on drawing from inspiration from the world around and trying to find ways to "artistically channel"
that inspiration in all that I do. You may have noticed the beginning of these changes but there will be some much bigger ones to come.

Life is all about being in the moment and enjoying it. It may sound like such a simple concept but to me it can be a challenge in the busy world of being a mom and a wife, a blogger and a entusiastic crafter -slash-wanna be artist! For this I'm Lovin' it Monday I first must do a shout out to my wonderful friends who I am extra lovin' right now. You'd think from the bouquets of flowers, jewelry, cookies, fruit and the home cooked dinner that were all dropped off for me on my Birthday that I was blessed with the greatest friends on earth, right? Well on top of all of that generosity, two of my closest girlfriends snuck into my house on Friday while I was at Disneyland and scrubbed my home from top to bottom.

How humbling that your friends would help you in a way that you need but would never dream of saying. Not that my house is a dirty mess but with the unexpected addition of two foster babies for the past three and a half months I have struggled every day just to try to keep my head above water. I hope that I can be even half the friend to others that they are to me!

Okay, now for the non-gushy stuff, I am LOVIN' my vinyl lettering from Uppercase Living . I have been wanting to order something from my friend ShaLayne for awhile now but I was so overwhelmed by the endless possibilities so I finally just custom ordered my own phrases. Here are the results:

Truthfully, I am not in a "lovin' it" mood with this yucky time change but I will do my best! First, lets start with this amazing magazine, Simply Handmade

I begged for a subscription to this magazine for Christmas and I have yet to be disappointed. First off, the quality is more like a book then a magazine and it is FULL of ideas and instructions. The style and the photographs are amazing, you will be drooling!

Next, on a completely seperate note.......I love this online store for fashionable yet modest clothing, Shade . Most of their line is made for layering and who can resist this jacket and this bubble tank .....did I mention the swimsuits?

Its Just a A Day In the Life.....

I am working on some pictures for a scrapbook page using Basic Grey Page of The Month Kit for March, so while we were in the line at the Starbucks drive-thru getting hot cocoa we had out own little mini photo session!

It was a lot of fun catching these real everday moments, afterall this is truly how "we roll". Cooper a huge mess finishing his lunch in the car because it was time to pick up Chase from school, Christopher just going with the flow, Jonas being silly with me in the front seat and Chase....well, he is a goof everywhere! Baby Ray is in there too but since he is in an rear facing carseat, you will just have to imagine his adorable baby boy grin!

Little League Opening Day

This weekend was opening day for Poway Little League, which is a big deal around here! Since I am cooped up in a house full of sick people (myself included) it seemed like a good time to post these pictures and remember what it felt like for us all to be out in the sun and healthy just a few short days ago!

Of course, if I am honest with myself I will remember that this day was crazy and left me feeling whiped out. Since my husband is the coach and the older boys were playing it meant me being alone with a 19 month old, 18 month old and 5 month old to watch a long opening day ceremony followed by a T-ball game (during what should have been naptime) which did not leave me with feeling like a shiny, happy person!

I had seen the Martha Stewart Circle Cutter in action on her show and it looked so simple, I had to get one. So why, do you ask, has it sat in my studio unopened for two months? Well, like most new crafting tools they can sometimes be intimidating. Will it really work well? Did I just spend money on one more tool that I won't like to use that much?

Well, I finally had to put my fears aside and crack it open. See, I am making an album out of floppy disks (yes, those ancient things) and I needed to make a certain size hole right in the middle of a square so, I couldn't lean on my trusty circle punch crutch.

So the verdict? Wow...e...wow....this thing is super awesome fantasticness! It is just as easy to use as it looked and I can not wait to cut more circles. You can make circles anywhere from 1" to 5-1/2" diameter, in 1/16" increments so it will cover almost all of your circle cutting needs. I picked mine up at Wal-Mart

What else am I loving? All the new CHA releases from Prima Marketing Inc. My local scrapbook store just got their new stuff in and I stocked up for these albums (the papers above are Prima as well)

The pictures don't do them justice, I'll get some sneak peeks up of how I am using them!

Between every four pages of white cardstock there are dividers of chipboard, hambly overlays, paint chip samples, envelopes, patterned papers, tags and so much more. They really get your creative juices flowing.

I worked hard to find what I feel to be the right balance between being "ready to go" while also creatively leaving room for those who want to embellish them further with pictures, stamps, artwork etc.- to really put their own stamp on it.

I must begrudgingly admit, I have been nervous about my package coming from my partner from the We The People Swap 4. This Amy Butler Weekender Bag is no simple task and the price to make it adds up-quickly! I loved the one I made and was hoping my partner would be able to make me a bag that matched my style. I know this sounds a little selfish, I usually have more fun with the creating and giving and don't worry so much about what I get in return but did I mention this bag was no simple task?

Well, all worries were quickly thrown out the window once I opened the box, it is so beautiful! I had to take a picture straight away (even without my lipstick) because this bag and I were CLEARLY meant for each other. Look what I was already wearing when the package arrived-from my top to my shoes, it was destined to be!

So TRUE....and hilarious!

Yummy Blackberry Cobbler

There is nothing like warm blackberry cobbler on a winter evening! I made this yummy creation for a chili cook-off at our church. I don't make chili but I am always happy to bring a dessert. The kids were disappointed it wasn't for them so I may make another for tomorrow, here is the recipe:

Ingredients:

2 1/2 C blackberries
2/3 C sugar
1 1/2 C flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
8 T (1 stick) plus 2 T unsalted butter
1/2 C heavy whipped cream

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a shallow baking dish and place blackberries inside. Sprinkle with 1/3 C sugar.

In the bowl of a food processor combine flour baking powder and salt. Add stick (8T) of butter and pulse to create a lumpy mixture. Add whipping cream and pulse until dough forms. Spoon dough over blackberries.

Melt remaining 2 T butter and drizzle over mounds of dough (yum...). Sprinkle with remaining 1/3 C sugar.

Bake about 30 to 40 minutes or until dough and fruit are cooked through and dough is lightly browned.

Business Card or Tea Wallet

I made this fun little business card holder for a Fat Quarter Sewing Challenge on Swap-bot that I am in. My partner likes miniature things, loves color and I thought this would be a fun little accessory that she may actually be able to use!

I used this great tutorial found HERE , with the size modified for a business card (instead of the tea wallet) and added my own little twist of embellishments. I made fun little stamped cards to go in the business cards slots since I figured 4 C Berry Baby business cards might seem like advertising! This project is so simple to make and lots of fun, I think I will make a tea wallet for myself as well and maybe a "Splenda Wallet" for my mom!

It has been thirteen wonderful years of craziness and laughter, you have the kindest heart of anyone I know and you are always so full of joy (and energy)! When you were little you wanted to grow up to fly choo-choo trains, I can't wait to see what else you grow up to do!

It is hard to believe that I am now the mother of a teenager! Here Jonas is showing off his ice cream cake creation. Everybody in our family gets this cake special made for their birthday with the toppings of their choice. Jonas chose caramel, gummi bears, and oreos (which is also the crust.........yummy), you can gain 10 pounds just looking at it!

100 Altered Journals on the Wall.......

Well, not quite 100, 60 to be exact! These journals were all made using this great tutorial by Grace Violet and are gifts to the sisters in our Relief Society.

As you can imagine, when making this many of anything you learn a few tips. First off, do NOT use the Glossy Mod Podge. Even if it seems like a fun finish just put it down and walk away. It will stay slightly tacky even when dry and will stick to the other books even weeks later when you think it is safe and you will not be able to pull them apart without ripping the cover and then you'll have to remake those ...sniff......

Also, a magazine is your best friend when decoupaging. Use a page as your work surface for the front cover and then when you go to decoupage the back cover, flip the page so you have a clean, Mod Podge free work surface, then repeat.

The journals you see in the pictures are all straight forward and simple because of the amount but for personal ones, and gift giving....have fun with it! Add embellishments, journaling strips, different papers, ets., the possibilities are limitless. Journaling is such a wonderful way to get in touch with yourself and the influences that are effecting your life, to track goals, improve prayers, and so much more. My friend Kelli keeps a journal for each child to record the funny things they say and stories of how they are, how great is that?

I picked up this book awhile ago and instantly fell in love. The book is bursting with great patterns that you will want to make, from the "I'll have one of Everything" bag to embroidered dish towels, an apron, skirts and a quilt with circles!

Another thing I truly value in this book are the tips and techniques in the begininng. As a new wave self-taught seamstress there are terms and tricks that I am not familiar with and this book covers them all with illustrations. I often flip to these pages when I want to try a new stitch or get a quick tip on my bias tape binding!

The Weekender Bag, In a Weekend

This weekend I decided to bite the bullet and make the Amy Butler Weekender Bag for the We The People Swap 4.

This pattern called for all three of my sewing nemesis': piping, bias cuts and heavy stabilizer oh, and who could forget the 30" heavy duty zipper, making it four. After countless hours I have about 20 pinprick scabs and achy hands but I ended up with a beautiful bag that I am going to stare at for a few day before I mail it off to my partner!

I used fabrics from Anna Maria Horner's Drawing Room, which is my all time favorite home decor line, and I love the bold print and contrasting colors. This pattern is exhausting and calls for a lot of patience but it is very well done and the end result is a high quality bag!

Valentine Treats -Marshmellow Lollipops

Chase and I whipped up these marshmallow lollipops for his Primary Class. They are so easy yet so cute!

Materials:

Large Marshmellows
Candy Melts
Sprinkles
Lollipop sticks
Lollipop bags
Gift Tags
Bakers twine or ribbon

Place your marshmallows on the sticks, melt candy melts as per manufacturers instructions, dip marshmallows in candymelt, add sprinkles. Place on wax lined baking sheet, place in refrigerator long enough for chocolate to harden, place in bags, tie with string add tags and you are done!

Mermaid Ruffle Dress

Today I just finished up this custom order dress for one of my customers on Etsy. Every time I make one of these dresses I fall in love with it and dream about having a little girl so I can dress her up! It's hard to tell on this mannequin, since it is smaller then the dress size, but it is such a "poofy" and fun dress. It takes a lot of gathering but the end result is well worth it (at least I think so). And here is my little picture ham who can not let me take photos without getting some of him!

Okay, I have been neglecting my family and friends who check in here for personal updates. Here is status on da boys!

JONAS

This is where you will find Jonas every week day. He is now doing Independent Study program from home in order for me to monitor his work, help him get organized and bring his grades up. Being a mother of a child with ADHD who is a smart GATE student now getting D's and F's is challenging. The school system just seems to want to ignore the problem but I just can't.

CHASE

Meet Chase's "cool shirt". It dictates what he takes to school for lunch (it can only be cool stuff that isn't messy) although it doesn't have powers to fix his morning bed head.

COOPER

Climbed (or should I say crashed) out of his crib the other day so now he is in a "big boy" bed. When he first saw it, he just stood there smiling. Strangely (but thankfully) he hasn't figured out that he can crawl in and out of it yet.

CHRISTOPHER & BABY RAY

Christopher is with us again for the 4th time since right before Christmas but hopefully it will be more long term this time so he can go home to more stability. Baby Ray is also still here and we hope he will get to go home with his mom soon which is definitely the best thing for him! Having 5 boys right now (3 of them under 2) is quite challenging to say the least. My sanity is quickly starting to chip away!!

When I first saw Amy Butler's Domestic Goddess pattern, I thought it looked like the Emmeline Apron but not as cute.

So the other day I was at a quilt shop and they had a sample on display and I fell in love! I added an extra contrasting fabric and the trim to liven it up and I am so happy with the way it turned out!

I made a long version because, well, how often do you find a long apron and this feels more like a dress when you put it on, I love the construction! There is a lot of pleating and no bias cuts (which I was thankful for) I wish I had taken a close up of the pleating details, it is truly beautiful.

There were a few huh??? moments for me with this pattern, especially the last step but I survived and will have to make another one just like it since this went out to my Sugar, Spice and Everything Nice swap partner today!

I'm Lovin' It Monday

There are so many things I could put on this list right now but I will try to keep it to one project!

I can't seem to get enough, my creative springboard is on overload! Just imagine all the possibilities, sizes, materials...the sky is the limit. Besides fun journals and scrapbooks they are great for school projects, calendars, picture frames, gated albums, oh my! See what I mean?

Here is what I have started with:

Next are some of my favorite materials I used for this project. I was having a hard time with the consistency of my Mod Podge lately and the bubbling and drying time. So last week Donna told me about Golden Gel Mediums which also can be used to adhere fabric and paper to your crafts. Because it is a gel it hasn't bubbled for me (yet) and it dries VERY fast. It is a much smoother finish and a little goes a long way. I will never go back!

Another love of mine are Hambly Studio Overlays which I added in as some of the pages in my book. I just can't get enough of them!

CD Cover Tutorial

This is such an easy and quick project I almost feel silly posting it. It can also be made with fabric or felt and would be great for a valentines gift for your sweetheart with a mix CD!

Materials:

(2) 5" by 11" sheets of main paper

(1) 2 1/2" by 12" sheet of coordinating paper

(2) 6" lengths of ribbon

optional embellishments

5" Xyron machine or adhesive (double stick tape, glue)

craft glue

First I ran one of the main sheets through the Xyron machine to cover it with adhesive (you can also just use double sided tape or glue). I then attached the ribbon lengths to each end.

note: the back side of my main paper is light blue

Then I secured the other main panel on top. The double thickness not only holds the ribbon, it also creates extra sturdiness to protect the CD.

I then folded the assembled main piece and the coordinating paper in half.

I glued along the bottom and side edges and at the crease making sure to leave a pocket open for the CD and the song list.

I then lined up the bottom edges of coordinating paper strip and the main paper and secured the two together. Once dry, you can insert the CD in one pocket and the playlist in the other. On this case, I chose to glue the playlist on one side instead...just depends on my mood!

For a variation, you can also use an jumbo brad and elastic for your closure. A few tips on this are:

1. use an eyelet to secure your elastic so it doesn't pull or rip the paper when used

2. align your brad and eyelet closer to the bottom (versus center) so that the coordinating panel will cover the brads/eyelet backs

3. cover the backs of the brad and eyelet with a sticker or square of paper so they don't scratch the CD!

i HEART Robots!

Okay, do you ever have one of those great finds that you just want to shout out to the world? Well, today I am gonna! I bought this great I HEART ROBOTS stamp by Sassafras Lass and it is sooooo much fun! For the multi colors effect, you just need to stamp in layers. I have used it on tags, packaging and I am going to use it for an altered journal idea for the kiddos (stay tuned).

I am also LOVING my new Donna Downey stamps, they are like instant works of art!

Paper Bag Album -LOVE theme-

This was my first attempt at a paperbag album and I must say that I am happy with the way it turned out. At first it was overwhelming to stare at a blank mini book but I found it quickly addicting!

Hopefully my swap partner will have plenty of photos and/or goodies to fill it up with and I hope she loves it as much as I loved making it!

Okay, I have fallen head over heals in love with inchies! I am not an artist by any means but I love using these mini canvases as embellishments for my paper crafting. Here are a few love-themed inchies I have been working on for an inchie swap. Sorry if the picture is a little fuzzy! Once you start playing with inchies, it is hard to stop! They add such a great dimension to your crafts, here is an example of one I used for a paper bag album I am working on.....

I think my favorite home decor weight fabric line of all time is Anna Marie Horners Drawing Room. Everytime I have a pattern that calls for decor weight fabric I run to it. Deep Thoughts by Chase the 5 year old

So I thought these discussions on Martin Luther King Jr. would be fun to share! The other day when we were driving home from the park, Chase asked if we could see a graveyard (he has been in to ghost stories lately).

So, I took him by our local cemetary. First he asked which grave was Jesus', when I told him Jesus wasn't buried here, he proceeded to ask which grave was for Martin Luther King, Jr.'s. I then told him that Poppa had met Martin Luther King Jr, to which he replied that so had Michelle in his class, who is 5 years old :o)

When I told his teacher, she laughed and told me that when she finished her lesson on Martin Luther King, Jr. she told all the kids that he had been shot and died. All the children were silent and in shock then Chase spoke up, " If he is dead, then why are we celebrating his Birthday?"

Ahhhhh....to be five again!
